Performing Arts

Engagement in the Arts involves the inspired and passionate exploration of ideas and the resultant products and performances.  We aim to capture the interest of all children by providing opportunities for creativity and expression of feelings and ideas through active participation in music.

Learning in the Arts is sequential and all students are given continued experience in the different Arts disciplines.  The classroom program includes use of Carl Orff and Kodaly philosophies.  The music program provides musical experiences that assist the development of aural and visual perceptions, cognitive processes, speech and coordination.

Children are encouraged to express ideas and feelings through sound and movement.  By catering for different rates and styles of learning, the children can develop interest and skills.

Children in Grades 3 to 5 are taught recorder in class lessons.  Grade 6 children incorporate recorder and / or their own instrument in class lessons.  This evolves from a strong foundation in Prep through to Grade 2 of a sequential program in the areas of beat, rhythm, pitch, tone, colour, style, form and harmony.

All children throughout the school experience a varied program involving body percussion, singing, class instrumental ensembles, drama, creating their own music and movements in groups, annual visits to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, experiencing  performances by Oz Opera and other music groups.

Classes are held in the Performing Arts Centre with every class having a 50 minute session each week.

An intensive 5 week dance program is conducted in 2nd term in the School Hall.  This can involve ethnic, folk, aboriginal and modern dances.

Children from Grades 3 to 6 have the opportunity to join:
  • The Choir
  • Orchestra
  • Rock Band
  • Recorder Ensemble
  • Recorder Consorts
  • Chamber Instrumental Ensemble.
These groups perform regularly at Eisteddfods, assemblies, local churches, school soirees, Oxfam Concerts and local senior afternoons by invitation.

The School Instrumental Program provides opportunities to introduce children to an instrument of the Orchestra or Rock Band.  Tuition is available in:
  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Cello
  • Double Bass
  • Clarinet
  • Saxophone
  • Flute

There are some instruments available for hire.  There are also separate practice rooms available for tutors and students.

Mont Albert Primary School Music Program encompasses teaching and learning through classical, modern and world music incorporated into the classroom, choral, orchestral and chamber works and whole school musical productions.

In this way student learning and understanding connects with communities and practices beyond the classroom.
