Music

We aim to capture the interest of all children by providing opportunities for creativity and expression of feelings and ideas through active participation in music.

The classroom program includes use of Carl-Orff and Kodaly techniques.  musical notes

By catering for different rates and styles of learning, the children can develop interests and skills.

The music program provides musical experiences that assist the development of aural and visual perception, cognitive processes, speech and co-ordination. Children are encouraged to express ideas and feelings through sound and movement.

All children from Grades 3 to 6 are taught recorder in class music lessons. This evolves from a strong foundation in Prep through to Grade 2 of a sequential program in the areas of beat, rhythm, pitch, tone colour, style, form and harmony.

Grade 3 to 6 children also experience a varied program involving body percussion, singing, class instrumental ensembles, annual visits to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Australian Ballet, researching a composer and instruments from around the world and creating their own music and movements in groups. Class music is held in the Performing Arts Centre with every class having a 50 minute session each week.

An intensive 6 week dance program for all children is conducted in 2nd term in the School Hall. This can involve ethnic, folk, aboriginal and modern dances.

Children from Grades 3 to 6 have the opportunity to join the Choir, Orchestra, Rock Band, Recorder Ensemble, Recorder Consort and a Chamber music Ensemble. These groups perform regularly at Assemblies, Eisteddfods, Education evenings, School Soirees, Oxfam concerts, local senior Citizen afternoons and other venues by invitation.

The School Instrumental Program provides opportunities to introduce children to an instrument of the Orchestra or Rock Band. Tuition is available in violin, viola, ‘cello, double bass, clarinet, saxophone, flute, guitar, trumpet, trombone, piano, drums and percussion. There are some instruments available for hire. There are also separate practice rooms available for tutors and students.

Mont Albert music program encompasses teaching and learning through classical, modern and world music within classroom, choral, orchestra, chamber works and whole –school productions. In this way student learning and understanding connects with communities and practices beyond the classroom.
